Welcome decisionPosted by Online on Apr 4th, 2012 // No Comment
Manila, Philippines – The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) recently decided to
close 80 nursing schools in the country due to low passing rates in the licensure examinations.
Its decision was welcomed by the Professional Regulations Commission (PRC)-Board of Nursing (BoN), saying it would help lessen the production of unemployed nurses.
“It will be good in way because there will be fewer unqualified nursing graduates. If we are talking about quality education, it will be beneficial,“ BoN Chairperson Dr. Carmencita Abaquin said.
She added it would also ensure that there would be quality over quantity in the nursing manpower supply.
Abaquin called on schools, colleges, and universities to strive hard to meet the standards set by the government and the board in order to ensure the production of quality nurses.
“We appeal to them to maintain the quality and the standards set.
They just have to conform with that,“ she said.
CHED Executive Director Julito Vitriolo earlier disclosed that 80 nursing schools risk having their degree programs closed due to low passing rates in licensure examinations.
Aside from their low passing rates, Vitriolo said they also failed to meet government regulations governing such issues like the quality of their faculty and the school’s facilities.
The Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE) had repeatedly urged incoming college students to consider enrolling in courses other than nursing since it is already among the “oversubscribed“ courses in the country. (Leslie Ann G. Aquino)
