Liggend slapen in economy kan nu bij 'Air New Zealand'


De luchtvaartmaatschappij Air New Zealand heeft met de onthulling van het innovatieve interieur van haar nieuwe Boeing 777 het voortouw genomen in het verlenen van meer comfort voor economypassagiers. Reizigers kunnen zich nu, na het ombouwen van hun stoel, neervlijen tijdens lange afstandsvluchten.
De eerste elf rijen van economy in de Boeing 777 zullen bestaan uit de nieuwe omvormbare stoelen. De zitvlakken van deze speciale zetels ('Skycouch' genaamd) kunnen breder gemaakt worden. De ongewone opstelling houdt in dat wanneer de 'Skycouch' uitgetrokken wordt, er geen ruimte is tussen het brede zitvlak en de rij stoelen daarvoor. Op die manier ontstaat er een smal bed voor twee personen waardoor ook passagiers in economy kunnen liggen en in het beste geval kunnen slapen.

Passagiers die de mogelijkheid willen hebben om een tukje te doen, zijn wel verplicht om maar liefst drie zetels te boeken (zie foto). Hoe gaat dit in zijn werk? Stel bijvoorbeeld dat je als koppel samen reist en wil gebruik maken van de 'Skycouch'. Dan betaal je de normale prijs voor twee zitplaatsen en halve prijs voor de derde zitplaats. Vanaf eind april zullen de nieuwe stoelen kunnen geboekt worden en zal de maatschappij ook de prijzen bekend maken. (hlnsydney/kve)

Cathay Pacific Said to Replace Economy Seats Amid Complaints

Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd., Hong Kong's biggest carrier, will replace economy-class seats in long-haul planes after passengers complained about discomfort, according to three people familiar with the plan.

The existing coach seats, which have fixed-backs to prevent passengers from disturbing the person behind them when reclining, will be refitted and moved to short-haul and regional aircraft, said the people who declined to be identified before an announcement. The seats were in 41 Cathay planes at the end of last year. Older aircraft were refitted with the units in a program that ran from 2007 to November, 2009.

"There's been a lot of criticism of the seats," said Shaun Rein, managing director of Shanghai-based China Market Research Group, which does consumer surveys for airlines and other clients. "It seems that Cathay is listening."

Philippine Flights to Brisbane halted

MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) - Philippines' largest airline Philippine Airlines (PAL) will stop flying to Brisbane, Australia due to weak demand.

Barely seven months after adding the new route to its international network, the airline announced on Thursday that flights to Brisbane will be indefinitely suspended starting Oct. 31, while flights to Melbourne will be cut to three times a week from the current five.

Flights to Sydney however were unaffected and remains to be one of PAL's most popular destinations.

"Market conditions and the onset of the lean season necessitated some changes in the number of destinations and frequency of flights the flag carrier mounts to Australia," PAL spokesperson Cielo Villaluna said.

Brisbane is the third most popular tourist destination in Australia, next to Sydney and Melbourne. It is renowned for its rich culture, architecture and landscape and is famous for its stature as a world city.

Parijse luchthaven dreigt zonder kerosine te vallen door stakingen






De Parijse luchthaven van Roissy beschikt door een staking over een kerosinereserve tot maandagavond of dinsdag. Intussen wordt in Frankrijk verder betoogd tegen de pensioenhervorming.

Sinds vrijdag krijgen de twee grootste luchthavens van de Franse hoofdstad, Roissy en Orly, geen kerosine meer. Door een staking tegen de pensioenhervorming in het land werd de pijpleiding afgesloten. De luchthaven van Orly beschikt nog over een voorraad voor 16 dagen.

In twaalf Franse olieraffinaderijen wordt gestaakt tegen de hervorming van het pensioenstelsel. Verschillende opslagplaatsen van olie worden bovendien geblokkeerd.


Betoging

Zaterdagmiddag werd er in Frankrijk weer betoogd. Zo'n 340.000 manifestanten betoogden tegen de aangekondigde pensioenhervorming.

KLM reconsidering RP operations due to tax row

KLM ROYAL Dutch Airlines, the sole carrier that operates long haul flights between Manila and Europe, said it may halt its Philippine operations due to local tax policies.

This comes as the government has continued to slap taxes on outbound passenger and cargo revenues of several foreign airlines whether or not the tickets were sold in the country, the KLM's regional manager Cees Ursem told BusinessWorld last week.

If so tourism will suffer, as will trade and investment prospects, as travellers to and from Europe will have no choice but to resort to costlier and inconvenient connecting flights, an official of the European business chamber said.

"We are reconsidering our operations to Manila," Mr. Ursem said in a chance interview.

"Tax issues are hurting the airlines dramatically," he added, citing the common carrier tax and gross Philippine billings.

Under the National Internal Revenue Code, international air carriers must pay a common carrier tax of 3% of their gross receipts and a 2.5% tax on all cargo and passenger revenues "originating from the Philippines in an uninterrupted flight irrespective of the place of sale or issue ... of the ticket".

The Philippines is the only country that charges airlines these taxes, Tourism Secretary Alberto A. Lim said at last week's Philippine Business Conference where he tagged the policy a bottleneck to development.

Lifting the taxes could increase international tourist arrivals by 2.2% and generate economic benefits worth $38-78 million, the International Air Transport Association said in a March report.

KLM has been urging officials to nix the tax. In the meantime it has reduced the seating capacity of its Philippine flights since January, Mr. Ursem said.

German airline Deutsche Lufthansa AG stopped offering its Manila-Frankfurt connection in April 2008 because of lower commercial yields and has reallocated capacity to other Asian gateways.

"We are trying to be in touch with the government. It's positive," Mr. Ursem said.

The European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP) was more downbeat, claiming that even the new administration has been slow to address the matter.

"[Former] Finance Secretary Margarito B. Teves said we were barking up the wrong tree and that we had to go through legislation instead. We have the same problem with this administration," ECCP Executive Vice-President Henry J. Schumacher said in a telephone interview last Friday.

"Legislation would be a long route and there has been no indication that [the government] will make [this issue] a priority," Mr. Schumacher said.

Bureau of Internal Revenue Commissioner Kim S. Jacinto-Henares declined to comment, saying in a text message the issue "needs to be studied."

Rep. Hermilando I. Mandanas (Batangas, 2nd district), chairman of the House of Representatives ways and means committee, said he would be filing a bill to exempt foreign airlines from such taxes.

But with Congress currently on a break and expected to focus on approving the 2011 budget when they next meet, progress will likely be slow, he admitted.

In the meantime, said Mr. Schumacher, there is "frustration all over."

"Tourism will only flourish if people can fly here. [Losing KLM] would be big blow as it's the only airline that flies nonstop to Amsterdam," he said.

Eten vliegtuig verliest smaak door lawaai

Manchester -  Het is niet de schuld van de kok als eten dat tijdens vluchten wordt geserveerd slecht smaakt. Onderzoekers claimen dat dit komt door het geluid van de motoren tijdens een vlucht.

"Er bestaat een algemene consensus dat vliegtuigvoedsel niet fantastisch smaakt", aldus Andy Woods, een onderzoeker van Unilever aan de universiteit van Manchester.

Smaakloos

"Wij zijn ervan uit gegaan dat vliegtuigmaatschappijen hun best doen om het eten zo lekker mogelijk te maken. We vroegen ons af waar het dan aan kan liggen dat het eten vaak zo smaakloos is."

De onderzoekers vergeleken een vliegtuigvlucht met een ruimtereis en kwamen zo tot de ontdekking. "NASA geeft hun astronauten erg sterk smakend eten mee, omdat ze in de ruimte het voedsel minder goed kunnen proeven", aldus Woods. "Wij denken dat dit door het achtergrondgeluid komt."

Geblinddoekt

Voor het onderzoek werden er 48 mensen geblinddoekt en een aantal zoete en zoute gerechten gevoerd, terwijl ze luisterden naar achtergrondgeluid of stilte door een koptelefoon. Elke vrijwilliger liet vervolgens weten wat ze van het gerecht vonden, door middel van een cijfer.

De vrijwilligers die luisterden naar achtergrondgeluid, zoals geruis dat te horen is in een vliegtuig, gaven de gerechten aanzienlijk minder hoge cijfers dan zij die geen geruis hoorden.

Volgens Woods heeft dit met aandachtsverdeling te maken. "Als het achtergrondgeluid erg hard is, zal je aandacht eerder daarnaar uitgaan dan naar het proeven van je eten", aldus Woods in The Daily Mail.

Uit het onderzoek kon Woods concluderen dat aangename geluiden de eetlust versterken. Dit is wellicht de reden dat restaurants achtergrondmuziek draaien. Restaurant Heston Blumenthal geeft om die reden iPods met zee-geluidseffecten aan klanten die het 'Sounds of the Sea'-gerecht bestellen.

Korean airline joins the fray at Clark

South Korea's budget carrier Jin Air will begin next week its regular flights from Clark to Incheon and vice versa through the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport at Clark.

The entry of the Korean airline at the 2,367-hectare Clark Civil Aviation Complex inside the Clark Freeport Zone in Pampanga will boost tourism in the entire region, according to Clark International Airport Corp. president Victor Jose Luciano.

Jin Air is the sixth addition to the international airlines operating at the Clark airport and is the second South Korean commercial airliner after Asiana Airlines, which commenced operations in October 2003.

"We welcome Jin Air's regular flights at DMIA that will not only bring in more Korean tourists to Clark but also give the people of Northern Luzon the opportunity to visit Korea," Luciano said.

Jin Air will operate five flights weekly at Clark utilizing the 180-seater Boeing 737-800 aircraft for the Incheon-Clark-Incheon route.

On Oct. 27, Luciano will lead a simple welcome ceremony for the Jin Air inaugural flight at the DMIA that is expected to arrive at about 1 a.m.

At 6 p.m. on the same day, Luciano will host a cocktail for airlines and the tourism industry at the Mahogany Room of the Holiday Inn Clark in the Mimosa Leisure Estate.

Jin Air is a full subsidiary of Korean Air. Korean Air is the flag carrier and the largest airline of South Korea and serves 130 cities in 45 countries around the world while its domestic divisions serve 20 destinations.

Jin Air began operations in July 2008 with routes to regional destinations in Korea using their Boeing 737-800 and in October 2009, began flights to Guam, Osaka and Bangkok.

"Since 2004, Korean tourists have immensely contributed to the local economy of Angeles City and the communities in the Metro Clark area as well as the rest of Central Luzon. There are an estimated 20,000 Korean tourists in the Clark and Subic," Luciano said.

Jin Air has five Boeing 737-800 aircraft in its fleet for their operations in the South East Asian region, including Japan.

Jin Air adds to the host of foreign and local carriers operating international and domestic flights at the DMIA that include Asiana Airlines that flies daily to Incheon; Tiger Airways that flies daily to Singapore; and, Air Asia that flies daily to Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu.

Also operating flights at the DMIA are local carrier Cebu Pacific Airwich lies to Hong Kong, Singapore, Macau and Bangkok; the Spirit of Manila Airlines that flies to Taipei, and South East Asian Airlines (Seair) that flies to Caticlan.

Al vluchten geschrapt vanaf Schiphol

SCHIPHOL (AFN) -  Op luchthaven Schiphol zijn dinsdagochtend vroeg al zeven vluchten geannuleerd, onder andere op Parijs, als gevolg van de acties in Frankrijk. Dat liet een woordvoerster van Luchtverkeersleiding Nederland (LVNL) weten.


Op de Franse luchthavens wordt actie gevoerd tegen de pensioenplannen van de Franse regering. Het is niet helemaal duidelijk wie er precies staken. Het gaat om luchtverkeersleiders, maar mogelijk ook om technisch personeel en ander grondpersoneel.

Zowel bestemmings- als overvliegend verkeer kan hinder ondervinden. Voor reizigers vanuit Nederland kan dit betekenen dat hun vlucht geschrapt wordt, vertraagd is of moet omvliegen. LVNL adviseert reizigers te informeren bij het reisbureau of de luchtvaartmaatschappij.
