Cebu Pac launches Manila-Bali flights

MANILA, Philippines - Low-cost carrier Cebu Pacific wants to take advantage of the huge demand for travel this summer by launching its Manila-Bali, Indonesia route.

"CEB launched its direct service from Manila-Bali, just in time for peak summer travel in the Philippines. Bali is now a convenient and affordable option for leisure travelers, honeymooners, groups of friends or families," said Candice Iyog, the airline's VP for marketing and distribution.

"CEB also aims to tap foreign tourists in Bali who wish to make the most of their holidays, by adding the Philippines to their travel itineraries."

The airline, which made its maiden flight to the island destination on Saturday, March 16, will offer Manila-Bali flights every Tuesday and Saturday. The flights will leave Manila at 4 am and arrive in Bali at 7:50 am. The return flights are scheduled to leave Bali at 8:35 am and arrive in Manila at 12:25 pm.

Bali is Cebu Pacific's 20th international destination and the second in Indonesia. The airline flies to Jakarta 4 times a week.

* Beware of the flying 'bandidos'

There was an incident that occurred on a flight to Hong Kong that would make you beef up your safety on board.  One passenger noticed that a fellow passenger was moving his carryall bag in the overhead compartment.  Thinking that this passenger was merely moving his bag to make room for his own, he simply glanced at the passenger and didn't raise any fuss.  When the plane landed in Hong Kong, a gut feeling told him to open the overhead compartment and retrieve his carryall bag.  When he opened it, his wife's jewelry, along with their cash, was gone.  There was a thief on board.  He and his wife quickly blocked both aisles to stop anyone at the back of the plane from disembarking, raising his voice in distress, "We've been robbed!"  The coach section had 120 passengers so they both shouted for assistance from the flight crew.  Only one steward responded by calling the aviation security.  In the meantime, the other passengers were getting agitated and wanted to get off the plane.  The harassed couple tried to control the exit of the passengers.  "Please check your own bags; if we lost valuables, you, too, may have been a victim," he pleaded.  Three fellow travelers decided to check their hand-carry and true enough, they, too, had been robbed.  It was only at this point that the cabin crew believed the couple and showed support.

"What can I remember about that suspicious passenger?" he asked. (That the suspect was dressed in black, wearing a French béret.)  The thief was standing in front of the victim/passenger, with his back turned, fidgeting, and obviously unnerved.

"I grabbed his arm and demanded that he open his bag and show its contents," said the victim/passenger.  Caught red- handed, the thief started to offload all the stuff that he had stolen in the span of an hour: "Money, jewelry, camera equipment, and thousands of dollars worth of goods and cash," confirmed the victim.

Eventually, the police boarded the aircraft to apprehend the thief.

What was very unsettling was that no one believed the victims until they took action to catch the thief/thieves and recover the goods stolen from them and from the three other victims.

Later, the police confirmed that this criminal activity has reached epidemic proportions with the authorities catching thieves almost every week on flights to Hong Kong.  The thieves came from Mainland China.

Their modus operandi:  They occupy the back rows of the plane to observe where bags are placed, especially those placed a row or a few rows away from the passenger's assigned seat.  Once the passenger has settled in, whether watching in-flight videos, reading, playing computer games, or simply napping, they spring to action.  They either use the tactic of moving the bags to distract the owner or pull out the bags surreptitiously and empty them of cash and other valuables.

They target foreign airlines because the penalties are so lenient and they yield good results.  Literally, a big steal.

It is the sign of the times that criminals are just as savvy, bold, and transient as any passenger who take to the skies.  What would stop them from not working their skill and their scum at 30,000 feet above the ground?

"It is estimated that only five percent are being caught, judging by the reports of passengers contacting the police after they have arrived at their destination," said the victim/passenger. How can we protect ourselves from these flying thieves?

Let us count the ways:

1) Always lock your hand luggage.  I use a combination lock so that it's easy to open if airport security, customs or TSA (Transportation Security Administration) would wish to check the contents of my hand luggage, upon check in or arrival.

2) Board the aircraft early so you can reserve or block the overhead compartment right beneath your seat.

3)  "Do not assume that luggage under your seat is safe; one passenger had her purse stolen by the guy sitting next to her while she slept," said the victim/passenger.

"When in doubt, wear or keep any valuables on you at all times," said the victim.

4) Wear a handbag that you can secure with a small padlock or hardware.

If your handbag is too big to tuck in with you, transfer your cash, passport, and other valuables into a pouch that you can keep close to you and even bring with you inside the lavatory.  When you arrive at your destination, return the pouch into your handbag.         

5) Treat other passengers on board as strangers and therefore do not be too trusting. Do not assume that all passengers are honest, decent, and law-abiding, like you.

6) Do not assume that business class or first class travel is secure.  Like the character played by Steve McQueen in the Thomas Crown Affair, there are wealthy robbers who steal for the kick of it.

7) Travel in tandem – with a friend or family – so that you can both look after each other and your valuables. These flying hoodlums have tainted the art, the enjoyment and thrill of traveling.  Be safe, not sorry.

The Tiger Onslaught in the Philippines

Tiger Airways Holdings is raising stake in the budget airline wars as it prepares war chest for Indonesia and Philippine operations costing US$236 million.

The low cost carrier subsidiary of Singapore Airlines is awaiting regulatory approval to rebrand SEAIR as Tiger Airways Philippines in the second quarter of 2013.

"The proceeds from the fundraising exercise will allow us to fortify our balance sheet and be well-positioned to grow the Tiger franchise in Asia," the carrier's Chief Executive Officer Koay Peng Yen said in the statement.

Major shareholder Singapore Airlines, which holds a 32.7% stake in Tiger, has agreed to take up its entitlement to the rights shares and convertible securities. It will also subscribe to shares and convertible securities not bought by other shareholders, provided its shareholding does not rise above 49.9%.

Temasek-owned Dahlia Investments, with a 7.3% stake in Tiger, has also agreed to subscribe to its entitlements.

Het heeft misschien maar een kleine kans op slagen in de luchtvaartsector maar een slim plan om vliegtuigpassagiers te tariferen in functie van hun gewicht heeft het levenslicht gezien. Zware reizigers moeten dan logischerwijs meer betalen voor hun ticket.

De Noorse professor Bharat P Bhatta vindt dat belangrijke maatstaven zoals het gewicht van de passagier en de toebedeelde zitplaats significant moeten doorwegen bij het berekenen van de kostprijs. Hij doet in dat kader drie voorstellen:

1. Ticketprijs volgens totale gewicht
Dit concept houdt in dat de kost berekend wordt in functie van het gewicht van de reiziger en zijn bagage met een vaste prijs per kilogram. Op die manier zal een passagier die 60 kilogram weegt slechts de helft betalen vergeleken met een persoon die 120 kg weegt.

2. Basistarief plus/minus extra kost
Deze optie vertrekt vanuit een vast basistarief. Zwaardere individuen zullen daar bovenop een extra kost aangerekend krijgen om de bijkomende kosten te dekken, terwijl lichtere personen een korting krijgen. Iedere passagier bekomt een tarief op maat.

3. Zelfde tarief voor personen met gemiddeld gewicht
Reizigers met een normaal, gemiddeld gewicht krijgen hetzelfde tarief. Een surplus of korting wordt aangerekend indien de bagage een bepaalde limiet overschrijdt. Zo krijg je drie tarieven, hoge, gemiddelde en lage.

"De prijs van een ticket berekenen op basis van gewicht en ruimte is een universeel principe dat courant in andere sectoren wordt toegepast", aldus Bhatta. "Vermits gewicht een primordiale rol speelt in de transportkost, moeten airlines dit in rekening brengen. Elke extra kilogram leidt immers tot meer brandstofverbruik, hogere CO2-emissies en dus bijkomende kosten".

Wat een onzin, hoe zouden ze dat practisch moeten organiseren? Een weegschaal in 't reisbureau is misschien haalbaar, maar voor on line boeken moet er dan eerst nog een on line weegschaal uitgevonden worden. En dan bij het inchecken voor de security nog even op de weegschaal en een supplementje gaan betalen of een korting ontvangen?

De hele organisatie van zoiets zou al meer kosten dan het extra brandstofverbruik....

Tiental jaren geleden was dat in Coron ook als je met seair vloog. Met handbage op weegschaal gaan staan, was je boven de 80kg moest je iets bij betalen, veel was het niet. Altijd bagage aan asawa geven

Ook vorig jaar april vanuit El Nido naar Manila met Seair. Alle bagage tezamen werd gewogen, en dan de passagiers.

Ik woog ietsje meer dan ik verwacht had. Misschien was de weegschaal minder nauwkeurig...

Ik heb net geboekt via Thai airways.Vertrek op 11 mei, terug op 29 mei, voor â,¬ 881,vertrek vanuit Brussel airport.

Misschien niet  de beste prijs maar :

ik hoef geen treinrit naar Amsterdam of Parijs te betalen.

Ik heb in de namiddag een domestic flight dus geen overbodige overnachting in Manila

Dan zal er niet zoveel veranderen , ik reis met mijn asawa en haar zoontje ......100kg+32k+48kg is 180 kg   gemiddeld 60 kg , zou eventueel goedkoper uitkomen.
Uiteraard afhankelijk van de norm die gehanteerd zou worden   bvb , 70kg/pers  dan zouden wij 30 kg besparen

PAL to buy 10 latest Boeing aircraft model

Flag carrier Philippine Airlines is eying the purchase of 10 of the latest Boeing aircraft model and an option to buy 10 more of the still untested Boeing 777X should the latest version of the jetliner live up to its reputation, PAL president and chief operating officer said on yesterday.

PAL president and COO Ramon Ang said the planned purchase of 20 more Boeing aircraft is on top of similar purchases from rival manufacturer Airbus Industries where the airline has ordered four more A330 jets.

The set of four A330 aircraft is on top of a total 65 the Toulouse, France-based plane maker committed for delivery to the flag carrier.

He said with aircraft such as the Boeing 777X, 17-hour flights such as those from Manila to New York would be possible without compromising safety and comfort for passengers and still allow the airline to post gains from their sustained operation.

San Miguel Corp. acquired management control over PAL only last year and has since pursued an aggressive aircraft acquisition program and looks to hire more hands to run the airline more efficiently and profitably.

The airline anticipates the delivery of 24 Airbus aircraft this year as PAL retires its old inventory of planes with brand new ones.* PNA
