50 cops finish bike patrol training in Lapulapu/Cebu

SOME 50 police officers in Lapu-Lapu City underwent a basic bicycle patrol course, as the police force prepares to launch a bike patrol team.

Two instructors from the United States came to Lapu-Lapu for the two-day training, which ended yesterday.

Lapu-Lapu City Police Office (LLCPO) Chief Rey Lyndon Lawas said using bicycles will enable the police to penetrate interior areas quickly.

"We will also be able to save gasoline. Using bicycles is also good for the health of our policemen," he told reporters last Friday.

Lawas said the Korean Association in Lapu-Lapu recently donated 10 mountain bikes to the police.

"We will request the mayor for more bikes," he said.

The participants of the training were taught some operational strategies and techniques on bike patrol.

"Those who were trained are prospect members of our bike patrol team," Lawas said.

Some of those who underwent the bicycle patrol course will also be assigned as trainers to other police officers.

The LLCPO has launched several efforts to curb crimes in the city.

Last year, it stepped up its anti-crime campaign by placing posters bearing police hotline numbers in different places, including public utility vehicles.

They also put security stickers on motorcycles whose drivers have the necessary legal documents such as license, as part of efforts to curb crimes involving motorcycles.

Meanwhile, Lawas said two police officers were assigned to assist security guards at the Lapu-Lapu City Hall of Justice since

Monday, even though they have not seen any security threat there.

Courthouses in Cebu have tightened their security following the shooting that killed three people and wounded another in the Palace of Justice in Cebu City last month.
