Meralco in manila was veroordeeld en moet miljoenen terugbetalen aan de gebruikers, dus echt lager is het hier niet enkel een restitutie van wat we eerder teveel betaald hebben.

De euro werd begin 1999 geïntroduceerd op een koers van 1,1747 dollar, om vervolgens in oktober 2000 het historische dieptepunt van 0,82 dollar per euro te bereiken. De hoogste waarde ooit werd op 15 juli 2008 genoteerd. De euro was op dat moment 1,6038 dollar waard. De afgelopen drie jaar bewoog de koers tussen 1,20 en 1,40 dollar.

MANILA (UPDATE) - The Philippine peso may have a relatively big drop when the local foreign exchange market reopens on Tuesday, catching up with other currencies that dropped as soon as the Swiss central bank rattled traders around the world on Thursday.

The Philippine currency market is closed from Thursday to Monday due to the visit of Pope Francis.

The Swiss National Bank unexpectedly removed the cap on the Swiss franc against the euro, leading to gains of as much as 41 percent against the euro and 38 percent against the dollar. (That means while the dollar fell against the franc, it gained against the euro.)

The franc gave up some of the gains today but jolted investors sold down stocks and bought up bonds, gold and other safe-haven investments.

Among the reasons cited for the turmoil: speculation that the Swiss central bank may have learned the European Central Bank will allow the euro to depreciate more than expected to boost the region's economies. Others say it was too much of a surprise for global markets still reeling from plunging oil prices and the effect of that on Russia and other oil producers.

"The dollar should be stronger, so we should be weaker," a dealer at a local bank, who declined to be identified, said in a phone interview. "We should be behind because we are closed for three days."

He said another factor that could add to the peso's decline is that it has fallen less against the dollar than other currencies have in the last few months, meaning it's actually gained against many currencies. If that is not justified, more nervous investors will erase it. The peso closed at 44.675 to the dollar on Wednesday, its fourth day up.

"Everybody is falling against the dollar except us. I wonder why," he said.

Another trader, who also declined to be identified, said the trading suspension may be beneficial.

"It could be a good thing we were on break when the news first came out," the trader, a senior official at a big bank's trading unit, said in a phone interview. "Hopefully the holidays will enable any adjustments in our markets to be made in measured increments rather than emotional moves,"

"The peso is strong, he said. "We've been depreciating against the USD only because the dollar itself is strong. The Philippine peso has been doing very well compared to other regional currencies thanks to remittances, the strong economy."

'Fixed point' gone

Bangko Sentral Governor Amando Tetangco said markets will be more unpredictable, but that emerging markets could benefit especially because Switzerland also lowered a key interest rate.

"The Swiss National Bank action effectively takes out one 'fixed point' in the global market," Tetangco said in a text message. "Analysts say this move signals the ECB quantitative easing is imminent."

"Emerging market currencies may initially weaken in sympathy with the euro, but with interest rate differentials still in favor of most emerging markets, it is possible we could see net inflows."

Filipinos in Switzerland to benefit

The franc's rise would be a boon for Filipinos in Switzerland paid in francs. There are more than 10,000 Filipinos in the central European country, according to the Philippine Ambassador Leslie Baja. Most of them are based around Geneva and work in nursing and services.

"Generally negative risk, so negative for equities and emerging markets,'' Lito Mercado, Treasury SVP at RCBC, said in a text message. "There will be a flight to safety, so positive gold, U.S. Treasuries and sovereigns like ROP, which rallied last night," he said, referring to Republic of the Philippines (ROP) dollar bonds. That would be a quick gain for investors who bought the $500 million of ROPs the government sold just last week.

A flight to gold may help gold producers like Philex Mining Corp. even as other stocks fall. Philippine stocks would feel the effect before the peso: The Philippine Stock Exchange last week convinced the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas to allow it to operate on Monday.

"Philippine markets should see demand for fixed income securities," said Lito Biacora, SVP global markets at Bank of the Philippine Islands. "Asia equities should see some volatilities as well but that's also related to U.S. earnings. Global bond yields should remain to trade lower (meaning bond prices higher) given the flight to quality as growth remains to be a concern across Eurozone,

"Euro-denominated securities will be scary so investors will try to get out," Unionbank fund manager Robert Ramos said in a phone interview. "They will go to either to the U.S., Asia or safer assets like fixed income."

Ramos said the 3-day holiday in the Philippines, and Martin Luther King Day in the U.S. on Monday, may be leaving brokers unaware of demand.

"Right now we are on break, and U.S. markets will be on break Monday, so it may take some time for the market to react," he said. "There could be orders for our shares already and we just don't know it." -- With a report from Warren de Guzman, ANC

Denk niet dat er een betere koers Php-Euro uitrolt maandag aangezien de ECB ook al plannen heeft aangekondigt en ik denk niet dat de peso veel lager zal zijn aangezien de ofw tranmittance ook mee zullen tellen.

Overigens als men dit weekend pint van een  rekening dan is de kans toch nog groot dat verschillende banken een gemiddelde koers aanhouden van 3 dagen voor en 3 dagen na de pintransactie, oftewel de beste rate voor de bank zelf.

Niet treuren. Ik heb een brief gehad van de overheid. Door een aanpassing van de barema's voor de bedrijfsvoorheffing krijg ik nu 1,5â,¬ meer netto pensioen
