PH post in Brussels issues e-passport

ABS-CBN Europe News Bureau 02/10/2011

BRUSSELS - Filipinos renewing or applying for a new passport can now avail of the E-Passport. The Philippine Embassy in Brussels has started issuing Electronic Passport in compliance with the standard set by International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

First Secretary and Consul Robespierre Bolivar confirmed that the embassy launched the processing of e-passports last month.

"Na-install na yung mga machines galing sa Maynila. Ngayon ay fully operational na yung pag-iisyu ng electronic passport. Ang Pilipinas ay isa ngayon sa iilang bansa lamang na nag-iisyu nito, isa sa pinakamoderno at secure na passport", he said.

Security feature

The embassy said the e-passport would make it easier for Filipinos to travel to other countries.

The e-passport contains biometric information that can be used for faster verification of the identity of the holder. It uses an integrated circuit chip which contains personal data, unique ID number and digital signature which is not present in the old green passport.

The passport's vital information is printed both on the data page of the passport and stored in the chip. Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) is used to authenticate the data stored electronically in the passport chip, making it virtually impossible to forge.

Consul Bolivar cited that it is easier to apply for e-passports since applicants do not have to bring an ID picture since the image will electronically be captured in the embassy.

However, the embassy made it clear that the old green passport is still valid up to its expiry date.
