KLM test futuristische passagierscontroles

Het internationale experiment heet Checkpoint of the future.

Qatar Airways is world's best airline

Businessmirror.com.ph Sunday, 28 August 2011

QATAR Airways was named the world's best airline at the recently concluded Skytrax World Airline Awards held at the French Air and Space Museum, as part of the Paris Air Show.

Over 150 senior management executives from 40 airlines around the globe attended the ceremony that named 10 different airlines as this year's best of the best. Among the countries represented were Brazil, the United States, Oman, South Africa, Canada, China, Japan, Australia, El Salvador, Singapore, Abu Dhabi, Turkey, Germany, Greece, Finland, India, Malaysia, South Korea, Dubai, Hong Kong and Indonesia.

Some 18 million passengers from around the world voted for their favorite airline across dozens of airline categories–from the airline with the best economy class to the best airline for in-flight entertainment. Forty of the 42 winning airlines were able to personally claim their awards at the ceremony.

"We express our sincere thanks to all the guests that attended the awards ceremony in Paris. The event was a great success and after much hard work it is very satisfying for our Market Research team to see the winning airlines receive their awards," said Edward Plaisted, chairman and chief executive officer of Skytrax.

The World Airline Awards, known as the Passengers Choice Awards, are recognized as the primary benchmarking tool for passenger satisfaction levels for airlines across the world–constituting a unique survey format based on analysis of business and leisure travelers and across all cabin classes–first, business, premium economy and economy.

Qatar Airways brought home the title of World's Best Airline after placing third last year. The airline also received the "Best First Class Lounge" accolade for its Premium Terminal at the carrier's Doha hub–a facility for exclusive use by Qatar Airways' first and business class passengers. The award further cements the Premium Terminal's stature as a world-class luxury facility for passengers to unwind and relax before their flight.

Last year's world's best airline South Korea's Asiana Airlines fell to third place. However, it was awarded Best Cabin Staff and Best Economy Class.

Cathay Pacific, an international airline based in Hong Kong, placed fourth in the rankings. The airline's operations include scheduled passenger and cargo services to 114 destinations in 36 countries worldwide, including codeshares and joint ventures. It was also named as the Best Transpacific Airline for customer product and service quality.

Also in the top 10 of the world's best airline list is Emirates, the flag carrier of Dubai, United Arab Emirates, with its largest airline in the Middle East, operating over 2,400 passenger flights per week to 111 cities in 62 countries across six continents. The Middle Eastern airline also bagged the World's Best Airline In-flight Entertainment award.

Six other airlines also made to the list of Skytrax World's Best Airlines. Singapore Airlines placed second. Thai Airways International and Etihad Airways secured the fifth and sixth spots, respectively. Air New Zealand followed at seventh; Qantas Airlines, eighth; and Turkish Airlines at ninth.

Eight out of the 10 winners are all Asia-based airlines. Skytrax gave away over 60 awards to 42 different airlines at the event.

PH airports to seize fake, pirated products

abs-cbnNEWS.com Posted at 08/31/2011

MANILA, Philippines - The government will soon start strictly enforcing the anti-piracy campaign in all international and local airports in the country.

Representatives of the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA), Intellectual Property Office (IPO) and the Optical Media Board (OMB) have signed a memorandum of agreement for the campaign's strict implementation.

MIAA General Manager Jose Angel Horado said x-ray scanners for check-in and hand-carried luggage will be used to detect if passengers have pirated CDs or DVDs, for example.

Mere possession of these products already violates Republic Act 8923, or the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines. It carries with it a maximum penalty of 5 years.

The IPO and the OMB will be given a free hand in implementing the law in all airports, Honrado said.

He added authorities will launch a 2-month information and awareness campaign to notify passengers of the policies.

Passengers will also be warned on board the aircraft to refrain from buying fake products or bringing them into the Philippines.

OMB Chairman Ronnie Ricketts and IPO Director Frisco Guce vowed to implement the full force of the law after the information and awareness campaign.

Ricketts expects a decrease of pirated products sold in the country once the plan is implemented.

Airphil Express flies Manila-Tacloban

Manila Bulletin August 31, 2011

MANILA, Philippines – Airphil Express recently opened a new domestic route — Manila-Tacloban - which is expected to generate tourist interest in a culturally rich and nature abundant destination.

According to Alfredo Herrera, Senior Vice President for Marketing and Sales, the Manila-Tacloban opening flight achieved "100% load factor," which means that every seat was occupied. The flight from Tacloban to Manila was likewise well received.

Despite having only one flight daily from Manila to Tacloban and vice versa, Herrera confirms that passengers' traffic is building up since its inaugural flight last July 21. By October 2011, the company expects to improve its flight schedule to twice daily.

Tacloban in Eastern Visayas is home to nationally important locations such as the site of the Leyte Landing that represents a watershed episode not just in the Philippines but in world history. There is also the San Juanico Bridge, the longest in the country that spans between Leyte and Samar, and underneath it where adventurers can engage in kayaking. Those looking to experience Tacloban in a more physically charged way can engage in activities like cave exploring, mountain climbing, dipping in waterfalls, or skimboarding and surfing. Dining by the sea is a rare treat for work-weary urbanites who will enjoy relaxing in local cafés and restaurant-hopping to feast on freshly caught seafood.

"It's about time that Filipinos got to know another special destination in the Visayas because the area is really a delight to explore. We want Filipinos to appreciate Tacloban for all the good reasons already known about the place, and the other possibilities that it can offer travelers who want to go on an adventure vacation," Herrera says.

The new route is part of the company's operation expansion and in promoting Airphil Express in the country as a Low Cost Carrier (LCC) therefore dominating and giving the airline market choices of air transportation that give value for money.

Frequent domestic travel is encouraged by Airphil Express' affordable airfare deals and is in line with the thrust of the Department of Tourism. With the Manila-Tacloban route, the airline is expected to further enhance its market share in the Visayas region and nationally. "We arrange flights to different alternative vacation and business destinations and support consumers who want to visit their loved ones in the provinces as often as they want, while providing value-added services. In the coming weeks, more domestic destinations will be rolled out," reports Herrera.

Two airlines seeking Philippine flights

Aviationnewsdaily September 4th, 2011 admin

TWO FOREIGN carriers – one based in the United States, the other in India – are looking to add the Philippines to their portfolio of destinations, official filings showed.
US-based United Air Lines, Inc. and India's Jet Airways, Ltd. have filed petitions before the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) for permits to operate according to bulletins published on Friday.

The development comes despite other foreign carriers' complaints against the Philippnes' allegedly discriminatory tax policy favoring local airlines.

"[The airlines have] filed...[petitions] for issuance of Foreign Air Carrier's Permit to operate international scheduled air transportation services," the bulletins read.

A hearing has been slated on Sept. 20 for Jet Airways' petition, while another is scheduled on Sept. 28 for United Air Lines'.

United Air Lines, if granted approval, will join a roster of other US-based airlines flying to the country: Delta Air Lines, Inc. and Hawaiian Airlines, Inc.

United Air Lines is a subsidiary of United Continental Holdings, Inc., which also operates Continental Airlines, Inc.

The airline has a total of six hubs, the biggest one of which is located in Chicago's O'Hare International Airport. Only one of United Air Lines' hubs is located outside of the US – in Narita International Airport in Japan.

On the other hand, there are no India-based airlines with flights to the Philippines; however, some have codeshare agreements with other carriers that allow them to fly here.

Jet Airways started operations in 1993, and claims to have one of the world's youngest aircraft fleet at an average fleet age of 5.53 years.

Jet Airways' main hub is located in the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai, India. It has five other hubs in India, and another one located in Brussels Airport in Belgium.

The number of passengers on international flights to and from the Philippines increased by 9% to 3.83 million in the first quarter from 3.52 million in the same period last year, latest CAB data showed. Of this, inbound passengers numbered 1.82 million while there were two million flying outbound.

Foreign indusry group Board of Airline Representatives, and Air France-KLM have warned against carriers' waning interest in operating in the Philippines, blaming the country's tax policy.
