Airline to start direct flights in December (Darwin<>Cebu)

Sunstar Wednesday, September 26, 2012

AUSTRALIAN Wild Orchid Airlines will starts its regular direct charter flights between Darwin City, Australia and Cebu City starting Dec. 15.

Top officials said yesterday the airline will use the fully-serviced and crewed Qantas Boeing 737 to fly for 20 Saturdays covering important holidays such as Christmas, New Year, Easter and the mid-year and final semester breaks.

"This is the first ever direct link between Cebu and Australia," Wild Orchid Aviation director for global operations David Fleming said in a press conference yesterday at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino.

The estimated direct travel time between Darwin and Cebu is 3.5 hours, more convenient than taking connecting flights, Fleming said.

The airline will depart Darwin at 1:00 pm every Saturday. It will arrive in Cebu at 3:05 p.m. On the return flight, the airline will leave Cebu at 4:35 p.m and will arrive in Darwin at 9:40 p.m on the same day.

The aircraft has a capacity of 158 seats, of which 12 seats are business class and 146 seats are economy.

Paul Wyatt, Wild Orchids Airlines marketing and promotions director, said Darwin's proximity to the Philippines opens tourism opportunities for Cebu, being strategically located at the center of the country's archipelago.

Darwin City is the capital city of Australia's Northern Territory. It has a population of 124,000 people. Majority of its inhabitants spends holidays in Bali, Indonesia.

Increased traffic

Wyatt said, however, that Bali's increasing tourism traffic has prompted the people from Darwin to look for new destinations.

He said that Darwin's current population base cannot sustain additional permanent regular weekly air services to new Asian destination. He said the direct chartered flight is a "new sustainable option" for those looking for new holiday destinations for various markets like singles, couples, families and groups.

"When you fly on a holiday season to Cebu, we are the cheapest," Wyatt said.

Officials of Wild Orchids Airlines on Tuesday met with Cebu's hoteliers, travel
agencies and tour operators to strengthen marketing and promotional activities between Darwin and Cebu. They also went resort hopping in Lapu-Lapu City yesterday.

"Only a few people from Darwin, except for Filipinos, know about Cebu. So, we expect some collaborative efforts between the two cities to sustain this endeavor. We have started promoting Cebu in Australia, through the Filipino community there. However, what Territorians know of Cebu is that Cebu's a good place and it has direct flight
from Darwin, what they have not known yet is what Cebu can offer to them," said Wyatt.

"We need to promote Cebu as a holiday destination and a gateway to other interesting neighboring islands, like Bohol," said Terry Argent, managing director of Wild Orchid Aviation.

Darwin City offers various tours to Cebuano tourists. Fleming said Cebuanos may enjoy activities like wildlife cruise, city tours, day tour to Litchfield National Park, half-day fishing, and fish and crocodile feeding.

Latest statistics from the Department of Tourism (DOT) 7 showed that the region's tourist arrivals from Australia in the first six months of the year stood at 17,874.

Of the number, 14,367 stayed in Cebu.

Total arrivals from Australia across the country in the first half of the year stood at 106,069 arrivals.

Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CICC) president Prudencio Gesta said the chartered flight of Darwin to Cebu is a welcome development.

Big boost

"This is a big boost to tourism as direct flights to Cebu can surely encourage more tourists to visit and open up or expand existing business relationship. Travel convenience like direct flights can increase volume of travelers," Gesta said.

Upscale hotel like Radisson Blu Hotel Cebu is considering Australia as a "good market" to capture given that they are long-staying tourist with high spending capability.

High-end resort hotel Imperial Palace Waterpark Resort and Spa, on the other hand, is looking at Australia as another key market to tap noting its proximity to the Philippines. The hotel said, Australia is one of countries, whose economy remained resilient despite the global financial crisis.

Clark not the solution to Manila air traffic woes - IATA chief

by Rappler.com Posted on 09/27/2012

MANILA, Philippines - The head of the global association that represents airlines said Clark airport in Pampanga is "not the solution" for the increasingly costly congestion issues at the country's main gateway.

In a press briefing on Thursday, September 27, International Air Transport Association (IATA) director general and CEO Tony Tyler said that Clark is far from Metro Manila, the country's capital, and access is difficult.

"Some say that Clark has potential to provide capacity relief. But it is 100 kilometer away with very inconvenient surface transport links," he said.

This statement is in contrast with the current strategy of the Aquino government, which under previous Transportation Mar Roxas, was pushing for the transfer of the main international aviation activities to the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport (DMIA), a former US naval base that sits on a sprawling area in Clark referred to as ideal for the phenomenal growth of the airline industry.

Tyler said that he will urge President Aquino when he meets him during his Philippine visit to "make a hub airport for Manila a priority." He did not provide a site where this new hub could be.

"Building a secondary airport or increasingly splitting the traffic with Clark in its current form will not be sufficient to put the Philippines on the same playing field as its much more competitive neighbors," he added.

Poor aviation infrastructure

He lamented the infrastructure woes at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), which is located within Metro Manila and has no room for expansion for its criss-crossed 1940's era runway.

"The state of air transport infrastructure in Manila is nothing short of a travesty," he said, adding that this is holding back the development of the Philippines.

"The Philippines also deserves better airport infrastructure. Arriving at T1 (NAIA Terminal 1) yesterday (September 26) brought a very strong sense of deja-vu. It was being constructed when I worked here in 1979. It has not changed much since that time. For me that brought back some fond memories. But for arriving tourists and businesspeople it is a memorable welcome–and mostly for the wrong reasons," he shared.

"It is a congested and chaotic experience," he said.

He cited the World Economic Forum's Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index, which ranks the Philippines 112 out of 139 countries for the quality of its air transport infrastructure.

"The only Asian countries to rank lower are Nepal, Bangladesh and Mongolia," he stressed.

Investment in aviation

He said that that while the Philippine government is working on the "new Manila hub," he suggested several strategies at the existing NAIA facilities.

"In the interim period we need to maximize the potential of the current facilities–both the terminal building and airside. The implementation of the IATA Worldwide Slot Guidelines is now complete. And we are eager to work with the authorities on further solutions."

He also mentioned the upgrade in air traffic control system at NAIA. "We need to unfreeze a major upgrade of the air traffic control system which is badly needed."

He urged the government to prioritize aviation infrastructure. "Failure to make appropriate investments in air transport is leaving the Philippines behind in the Asian economic growth story."

"Look around the region. In the last 15 or so years we have seen whole new airports open in Hong Kong, Nagoya, Seoul, Kuala Lumpur, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Bangkok. These countries place aviation connectivity as a core component of their economic strategy. And they have invested in the infrastructure to support the air transport links. And they are reaping the economic benefits," he said. - Rappler.com
