The Trade Department announced on Monday a modified system for the inspection and marking of  motorcyclists helmets.

The DTI said helmet owners with surnames starting with letters A to F can apply for inspection during the month of September; those with last names starting with letters G to O are scheduled in October; while P to Z in November.

The letter-coding scheme is in addition to the current number-coding scheme where the schedule of helmet inspection and marking is according to the last digit of the license plate of their motorcycles. If it is 1 and 2 (Monday), 3 and 4 (Tuesday), 5 and 6 (Wednesday), 7 and 8 (Thursday), 9 and 0  (Friday).

Under the combined system, helmet owners whose surname start with letter M and with motorcycle plate ending in number 5 can apply on Wednesdays in October.

DTI urged the motorcycle owners to have their helmets inspected and marked with ICC stickers to avoid penalties which will be imposed by the Land Transportation Office starting Jan. 1, 2013.

During the inspection, riders should bring their motorcycle helmets, two copies of filled-out application form, any government-issued IDs, photocopy of government-issued ID, and photocopy of motorcycle registration.

DTI also reminded the public that application forms and processing for the ICC are free of charge and application forms are available at DTI offices and can be downloaded from http://www.dti.gov.ph/uploads.

In Metro Manila, motorcycle owners can go to the following application centers for helmet inspection: Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium — P. Ocampo St., (formerly Vito Cruz St.), Malate, Manila; DTI Area Office, Hi-way 54 Plaza, 986 Stanford St., Edsa, Quezon City (infront of SM Megamall); and DTI Camanava Area Office, 5F Araneta Square Mall, Bonifacio Monument Circle, Rizal Ave. Ext. cor. Samson Rd., Caloocan City.

DTI also said that it also conducts helmet inspection in private companies and government agencies. Companies may send their request for schedule until Sept. 30.
