What 700 MHz frequency does to internet speeds

Posted at Jun 02 2016 10:09 PM

MANILA - The 700MHz additional frequency acquired by Globe Telecom and Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) will improve internet coverage and penetration to help stabilize speed, but does not necessarily make internet services faster, experts said.
READ: PLDT, Globe to acquire San Miguel's telecom business
Roy Espiritu, spokesman for Information and Communication Technology office of the Department of Science and Technology, said the 700MHz frequency allows networks to reach rural areas and penetrate through walls.
For instance, those staying in the basement will have the same signal strength as those staying on other floors.
Espiritu said, in that sense, the frequency does help improve internet speed. But for those areas where signal is already strong, Espiritu said they may not feel any significant increase in internet speed, unless telcos do something to ease congestion and peering.
Espiritu calls the average 5mbps internet speed that National Telecommunications Commission expects from telcos a "very hopeful expectation."
For him, the way to improve internet speed is to have a third player in the industry that could pressure the two leading telcos to upgrade their services.
He said the remaining 20MHz bandwidth from the 700MHz frequency should be enough for a third player.
Internet speed in the Philippines is among the most expensive and the second slowest in Asia, next only to Afghanistan. Consumer groups have blamed this on a lack of competition.

Mr. Cu showed us a chart that gave everyone an idea why Internet speeds are so slow in the Philippines, which has some 15,000 cellsites all over the country. In comparison, Vietnam has 55,000 cellsites, Indonesia 76,477 cellsites while Thailand has 52,483 cellsites. Even Bangladesh beat the Philippines with 27,000 cellsites. This means that the work of the telecom companies is cut out for them. While telecom providers are more than eager to build more capacity with more cellsites, they are hostaged by the bureaucracy of the local government units, or worse, corruption.

So when you are experiencing slow Internet speed, stop cursing the telcos but start cursing your local government officials who are making it difficult for telcos to set up more cellsites in your area.  For instance, it takes a minimum of 25 permits before any cellsite can be approved and if the local government unit were cooperative...it would still take at least eight months to construct and install a cellsite.

Duterte: Improve internet services or face foreign players

MANILA - President-elect Rodrigo Duterte has warned telecommunications companies anew to improve internet services in the country or face competition from foreign players.
In a press briefing late Thursday, Duterte said he is "not satisfied" with the connectivity services in the country.
"I am quite not satisfied because of the connectivity problem. If you cannot improve on the services, that's what I said, I would really agree to the coming in of foreign players, also with energy," he said when asked about the mega deal between Globe Telecom and Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT).
Globe and PLDT said they would jointly roll out San Miguel's assets after each acquired a 50-percent stake in the business worth P70 billion.

He said that according to engineers he talked to, the purchase of the assets will improve connectivity.
The country's internet speed is the second slowest in Asia, next only to Afghanistan. Internet services in the Philippines is also among the most expensive.
A 2015 Ookla Speedtest showed that consumer download speeds in the Philippines ranked 176th out of 202 countries. The cost per megabit per second in the Philippines is also one of the most expensive with an average value of $18.18, versus the global average of $5.21.

:hoedjeaf:
