Police: 35 killed, 12 hurt in Benguet bus crash

At least 35 people were confirmed killed when a speeding bus with 45 passengers fell into a ravine in Benguet province on Wednesday morning, a police official said.

Chief Inspector Ma. Teresa Guinto-Pucay, chief of the Benguet police community relations office, told GMANews.TV the incident happened on the Anbakway Road in Barangay Banangan in Sablan town at about 9:20 a.m.

An initial police investigation showed the Esonice bus, with plate number AYB 594, was traveling at high speed when the driver lost control of the vehicle, sending it off the road and 35 feet down into a ravine.

The bus was en route to La Union province from Baguio City when it crashed.

Authorities said 35 passengers died on the spot, while 12 were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, including the bus driver and the conductor.

Of those wounded, six were conscious and the rest were unconscious, Pucay said.

"Mag-interview kami sa kanila kapag nagkamalay na para ma-prepare na ang charges (We will be interviewing the victims, once the others become conscious, so we can prepare for the filing of charges)," she said.

Pucay said the local police would likely prepare charges of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide and serious physical injuries, not only against the driver but also the bus conductor.

"Puwedeng isali iyong konduktor kasi lumundag siya bago bumagsak yung bus kaya siya nakaligtas [We might include the conductor in the charges because he jumped off the bus before it fell. That's why he survived]," the police officer said.

Pucay said they are still determining the cause of the accident, adding that it could not have been due to a slippery road because it was not raining when it occurred.

"Nawalan ng konrtol ang driver at nahulog. Pababa kasi iyong daan kaya dapat nag-menor siya. Pero ayun, masyadong mabilis kaya nag-out of way," Pucay said.

(The road was downhill, so the driver should have reduced speed. But it seemed he didn't, that's why the vehicle went out of the way and fell.)

But Senior Superintendent Wilben Mayor, provincial police director, said they were looking into reports that the incident was caused by a "mechanical defect."

"Hindi daw maipasok yung segunda. Pababa iyong bus hindi pumasok sa segunda kaya napabilis," he said.

As of posting, retrieval operations are ongoing at the site, Pucay added

We waren eens op een bus die dezelfde route nam.  Het was een bijna dodelijke reis.  Voor die chauffeurs, het is een speedway,
juist om hun keuren te tonen hoe goed ze zijn in het rijden.  Had van m'n zetel moeten gaan om eens aan de schouder van de chauffeur te tikken om te zeggen dat hij trager moet rijden.  We zaten op de anderste zetel en de mensen vlogen wel links en rechts rond de bochten.

je ik heb de zelfde ervaring , ben net terug van de fils , en wat ik daar weer mee maakte met die busjes is niet te bevatten , vooral de laatste rit savond,s van ormoc naar baybay is levens gevaarlijk , ze rijden dan veelal met 2 bussen naast elkaar met z,on 120 km per uur , wetstrijd noemen ze dat daar. echt levensgevaarlijke situaties alles en iedereen moet maar wijken voor die klanten , en ze lachen er ook nog bij , en niemand die er wat van zecht.

Och, gevaar kennen ze niet. Vorig jaar waren we met de auto naar Cubic geweest ( 9 personen in de wagen ). Mijn schoonbroer zat achter het stuur. Ik werd letterlijk misselijk in de auto. Inhalen, gas geven, terug moeten invoegen omdat er een ander voertuig aankwam, dan hard remmen, bumperkleven......... noem het maar op. Als je daar dan een opmerking over maakt, lachen ze je uit. Sinds december vorig jaar ligt hij 2 meter dieper. Als het te laat is gaan ze beginnen jammeren. Hetzelfde met vuurwerk, kinderen gaan er vlak bijstaan, als ze dan een hand of een oog kwijt zijn vragen ze zich af waarom.................

Benguet bus crash death toll climbs to 40

MANILA, Philippines– (UPDATE 3) The number of fatalities in the bus accident in Benguet province rose to 40 Wednesday afternoon, as authorities struggled to retrieve one body pinned by the bus' engine, the provincial police chief said.

In a phone interview, Senior Superintendent Wilben Mayor said nine more people were being treated at Baguio General Hospital for injuries.

He said rescuers have retrieved four more bodies from the bus wreckage and were trying to retrieve another body pinned under the bus' engine.

He also said that the driver of the bus will be facing charges for reckless imprudence resulting to homicide and physical injuries because of the incident.

Senior Superintendent Agrimero Cruz Jr. said the driver of the Eso Nice bus (AYB 549) suddenly lost control of the vehicle while negotiating Naguilian Road in Barangay (village) Banangan, Sablan town at 9:20 a.m.

As a result, the bus, with 47 passengers on board and which was on its way to La Union from Baguio City, plunged into a 35-foot ravine.

Cruz said police have earlier retrieved the bodies of 35 passengers. Six other passengers were rescued but they sustained serious injuries. They were also reportedly unconscious.

The bus conductor, John Patrick Flores, said he survived by jumping out of the door before the vehicle plunged into the ravine.

"The driver tried to ram the bus into a mango tree to prevent it from falling, but failed," Flores said.

Police Senior Inspector Leo Guay, who led the search and retrieval operations, said the destroyed vehicle rested on its side on shrub-covered ground.

He said the steep slope made it difficult for rescuers to retrieve the mangled bodies from inside the wreckage.

"There were a few survivors, including the driver and the conductor. It happened very quick, the driver just lost control," Guay said.

Guay said police were in the process of informing relatives of the victims, but said no one from the company that owned the bus had so far come forward to help.

Rescue and retrieval operations are still ongoing at this time, he said.

Baguio is about 200 kilometers (120 miles) north of Manila.

Fifteen people were killed last month when a bus slammed into a concrete wall in Cebu, the Philippines' second biggest city.

Twenty-one people, most of them Iranian medical students, were killed a month earlier, also in Cebu, when a bus fell off a cliff.

Veertig doden bij busongeval in Filipijnen

HLN update:  Bij een busongeval op de Filipijnen zijn 40 mensen omgekomen. Er vielen ook zes zwaargewonden. Dat heeft de lokale politie gezegd. Aan boord van de bus bevonden zich 47 mensen, allen van Filipijnse origine. Het voertuig, dat uit de stad Baguio vertrokken was, stortte in een ravijn nadat de remmen het begaven.

Ten zuiden van Manilla, dat lijkt me een foutje.
Wel weer een heftig busongeluk, zal helaas blijven gebeuren, scheuren er maar op los.

ligt er maar aan welke route, als je van Manilla naar Batangas gaat is het niet zo een probleem, toch bijna alleen maar snelweg, of je dan in bus of auto zit, maakt weinig uit.
in de bergen hoeft voor mij ook niet.
