Cebu Pacific eyes more flights to Hanoi and Guangzhou

GMA July 12, 2013

Cebu Air Inc., operator of budget airline Cebu Pacific, is mounting additional flights to China and Vietnam to meet the growing demand in those routes, considered as among the fastest growing markets in the region, the company said Friday.

"Vietnam and China are two of our fast-growing source markets for foreign tourists, noted Candice Iyog, vice president for marketing and distribution. "We continue to support the government's tourism goals, with this increased connectivity and Cebu Pacific's trademark lowest fares," she added.

The additional flights would mean a 33 percent increase in seat capacity for the airline, particularly covering the Manila-Hanoi and the Manila-Guangzhou routes.

"This is also in line with the delivery of more aircraft in 2013, as we expand in Asia and the Middle East. These additional flights will provide more flight schedule options to guests booking their flights in time for the holidays," Iyog said. – VS, GMA News

Inflight calls, Internet now on PAL flights

INQUIRER.net    Friday, July 12th, 2013

MANILA, Philippines—Passengers of Philippine Airlines can now make phone calls and browse the internet while inflight with the installation of OnAir cutting-edge connectivity equipment on PAL's long-range aircraft.

The novel service, called PAL iN AiR, is made possible with the installation of the first inflight connectivity hardware, called GSMConneX, on a PAL Boeing 777-300ER aircraft that flew from Manila to Vancouver last July 9, 2013, providing passengers with GSM and WiFi services during the flight.

The special connectivity equipment will progressively be fitted in all B777 and Airbus A330-343 aircraft of PAL, a statement from the airline company sent to media on Friday said.

PAL is the first commercial airline installed with the GSMConneX equipment supplied by TriaGnoSys, while OnAir is the supplier for the GSM and WiFi connection.

PAL President Ramon S. Ang said, "Allowing our passengers to call and surf the web while flying is another first only a legacy carrier like PAL can offer. This new service is part of our strategy to provide only the best to our customers."

Dr Axel Jahn, Managing Director of TriaGnoSys, said, "PAL is the first GSMConneX commercial airline customer. We designed our hardware and software portfolio to be highly flexible, so we were able to move very quickly to meet the airline's specific requirements, which in this case included the addition of WiFi capability."

Aside from connectivity, the GSMConneX platform was designed to host a wide range of software application modules, including entertainment and non-flight-critical cockpit applications. The GSMConneX hardware is manufactured at TriaGnoSys' headquarters in Oberpfaffenhofen near Munich, Germany.

Stijgende zeespiegel bedreigt New Yorkse luchthavens

Daily PAL flights to Paris, London in October

MANILA, Philippines - Following the lifting of the European Union (EU) ban on the country's flag carrier, Philippine Airlines (PAL) chief executive Ramon Ang said that travelers can expect daily flights to major European destinations.

Ang said in a television interview that PAL will likely use its entitlements to fly to Europe on a day to day basis starting in October.

"Seven times a week flights to London, seven times a week flights to Paris and other destinations," Ang said.

Ang, who is also CEO of food manufacturing giant San Miguel Corporation, added that PAL flights will be faster than Middle East-based airlines that take 18 to 24 hours from Manila to Europe.

"Our flights will take you 12 to 13 hours one way compared to other airline flights when you still have to wait for several hours in their hubs," Ang said.

The executive is also confident that PAL's ticket prices will be "very competitive" with other airlines, which offer economy seats from Manila to London at $1,200 or about P52,000.

"All these European flights will improve the profitability of the airline. I think it will improve because right now we have all these long range aircrafts such as Airbuses which we have not been able to utilize," Ang said.

The PAL executive said that the airline will soon start to make arrangements from different airports to grant it a slot.

The Philippines has been in EU's blacklist since 2010 after the 28-nation bloc found a "significant safety concern" after a 2009 aviation audit.

EU lifted the ban Wednesday after observing "improvements" in the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines, with flag-carrying PAL being the first company allowed back into European skies.

The Department of Tourism Secretary Ramon Jimenez, meanwhile, said that the "good news" announced by the EU will significantly boost tourism and bring 600,000 more visitors from Europe.

"Looking forward, we are optimistic and confident that other Philippine carriers will progress in their committed endeavor to address their respective safety issues that would allow them to gain access to tourist-rich Europe," Jimenez said in a statement Thursday.

What Drives Zest Air's Cancellations?
Empty Seats

The Exciting World of Philippine Aviation

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) has said enough of Zest Airways excuses of cancelling flights as it placed the airline under "heightened" surveillance by safety inspectors following its repeated cancellation of flights due to alleged mechanical problems.

Sources in the industry however discloses that the airline is not generating enough passengers for some of the scheduled flights for which reason they have been cancelled during the past weeks causing inconvenience to its booked passengers.

In July, the carrier cancelled a total of 33 flights mostly going to Kalibo.

Today Zest Air cancelled flight 326 bound for Tacloban.Yesterday the airline cancelled 8 flights all due to aircraft situation problem.

CAAP Deputy Director General John Andrews said that airlines has a habit of cancelling flights with low booking, and just reason out aircraft situation as the problem.

Andrew said they will inspect not only Zest Air aircraft but also other operators who cancels flight due to flight situation problems and find out whether actual maintenance and repair is done and made on the aircraft as has been reasoned out.

Tiger Airways to make Cebu hub

Sun.Star Network Online -Jeandie O. Galolo
Today, 05:38:27 AM

SEEING Cebu as a strong brand for travelers in the Asia-Pacific region, a low-cost carrier is planning to make the province its new hub.

Tiger Airways Philippines, an affiliate of Singapore's Tiger Airways, is planning to mount more international and domestic flights to and from Cebu, said its president and chief executive officer Olive Ramos.

Ramos said Cebu is a very strong brand in Asia and is known as a favorite destination for business and leisure by Asian tourists.

Tiger Airways Philippines currently operates domestic flights from its main base at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport and international flights out of Clark International Airport.

The airline flies to 14 destinations, four of these are out of Clark, to different countries in Asia like Hong Kong, Bangkok and Singapore and one direct flight from Kalibo to Singapore.

Ramos said Tiger Airways Philippines will join an open sky discussion in October together with other Philippine carriers and the Civil Aeronautics Board to establish additional flight rights to serve Japan.

Japan and South Korea have been imposing restrictions on Philippine carriers from mounting additional flights to their countries due to safety concerns raised by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

Ban lifted

Early this year, ICAO removed the Philippines from its aviation blacklist. This was followed by Europe lifting its ban last month.

There have been invitations for open sky discussions or air talks with Japan in 2009 and South Korea in 2012 but the requests were both rejected.

Ramos said she is hoping for a positive outcome of the open sky discussion, with their priority on the Cebu-Osaka route.

Tigerair Philippines is 60 percent owned by a consortium of Filipino investors while the remaining shares are owned by the Singaporean Tiger Air Holdings. Tigerair Philippines has five aircrafts, three of which are Airbus A320 and two are A319. The company entered the low budget air transport industry in the Philippines in July 2012.
