CitaatCops probe grenade blast
at house of mayoralty bet

BY JUDY F. PARTLOW
Philippine National Police investigators are still digging deeper to verify if a bomb explosion early yesterday at the house of a former mayor, who is making a comeback in Monday's polls, is election-related.

Senior Supt. Harris Fama, acting PNP provincial director for Negros Oriental, assured that regardless of the nature or orientation of the grenade explosion at the house of Marcelo Adanza's in Zamboanguita town, the police are working double time in its investigation.

He clarified that it was not an improvised explosive device as earlier reported but a grenade, a small bomb that can be thrown by hand, that had detonated at the Adanza residence.

A police report earlier said that at around 4:30 a.m. yesterday, an explosion occurred at the residence of Adanza along the national highway of Barangay Basak in Zamboanguita, about 28 kilometers south of this capital.

Adanza, a former Board member and former mayor of Zamboanguita, is making a comeback, being a candidate of the National Unity Party.

The police report via Amigo Cops text blast said the explosion damaged two vehicles parked inside the premises of the residence.

The vehicles were described as one white pick-up with plate number #LDF 847and a gray Strada with a red plate number# SHC 782.

Initial investigation conducted by the Zamboanguita police revealed that after the explosion, as alleged by the victim and the neighbors, they heard a motorcycle starting up and speeding towards the north direction.

Fama said he directed the PNP Crime Laboratory and the Explosives Ordnance Disposal team to proceed to the scene.

He admitted of a request from the purported victim of the grenade blast for security detail, although this cannot be facilitated immediately as there are procedures to follow.

A committee is tasked to look into requests for security detail but Fama assured that momentarily, police are now deployed there to conduct regular patrol.

Meanwhile, he asked the politicians to secure themselves and be extra careful when moving around as their security cannot be entrusted totally on the police and the military.

The candidates should be aware of the security risks, knowing they are vulnerable to threats and harassments.

This is not the first time that a grenade throwing incident was reported at the residence of the Adanza's, known to be a political family in Zamboanguita. Adanza's son, incumbent Mayor Kit Mark Adanza, is running for board member of the 3rd district of Negros Oriental.

The late wife of Marcelo and Kit Mark's mother, Lourdes, was also a former mayor of Zamboanguita. During her term sometime in 2004, the Adanza family also reported a grenade-throwing incident at their house which they said was politically motivated.*JFP
