Hieronder een verhaal van "Kojak"....ik ben het niet altijd met hem eens maar deze keer toch wel.......

Wel de moeite waard om te lezen en is niet alleen van toepassing op Dumaguete City .... :denk: :denk:

CitaatI received two separate reports from two different foreigners that they were assaulted by a Filipino government official waving a gun and screaming, "You! foreigners are destroying my country!" I became curious as to just how a country that survived 444 years of Spanish exploitation, 50 years of American domination and four years of Japanese abuse, not to mention a short period of British occupation, is now suddenly being destroy by a few thousand fat old foreigners.

Three young Filipinos, from prominent Manila families pulled a foreigner from his car and beat him to death. His crime? He was a foreigner! ( He just got off work and was going home to his family). They got PROBATION!! ?? Three Filipinos ambushed a lone drunk foreigner and kicked him to death on the streets of Dumaguete, the city of "Gentile People".

It is true, many of foreigners do not understand Filipino history or culture. A few of us are even rude crude and sometimes insensitive. We sit around and mumble and grumble about the way things are done here much the same way Filipinos in America mumble and grumble about our culture. Some of us are on our worst behavior instead of our best behavior. But none of that is "destroying the country" or deserving a "death penalty". Foreigners have an obligation to be on their best behavior while guests here but Filipinos have an equal responsibility to be good hosts.

Maybe it is the fact that foreigners seem inordinately successful in getting young beautiful Filipinas to share their life. Most of us foreigners would like to think the beautiful Filipinas are with us because they respect and love us. But let's get real, most of us are not exactly "Brad Pitt" and many of us have seen better days. There can be no doubt that financial security plays a role in some of these relationships and to be honest it does in most relationships. You never see any lady in any country lining up to date or marry a bum or beggar. Even in traditional Filipino courtship the suitor had to prove to the family he could provide for his fiance. Economics is and always will be a consideration in any relationship.

What I do not understand is these young girls have made their own free will choice ; nobody forced them; how is that anyone business but theirs. Those relationships that are based solely on financial security, often punish themselves and need no outside help. Being married to someone from a different culture / generation is not easy for anyone.

Besides this, there are 25,206,467 Filipinos and 25,485,482 Filipinas under 65 in the Philippines. That means there are 279,025 Filipinas without the possibility of finding a Filipino partner. They are destined never to marry anyone unless us fat old foreigners lend a hand. According to the Philippine government most foreigner-Filipino marriages are with other Asians (Chinese, Korean or Japanese) but Filipinos seem to resent western mixed marriages more than Eastern. This is a minor mystery to me. Why is my wife a "whore" but the wife of an old Chinese merchant is a "lady"? How come a daughter of a Chinese merchant can become a member of the Philippine Congress, but I can not get a senior discount even though I pay taxes just like you? ( in American Filipino foreigner even get Social Security and other benefits but after 15 years in the Philippines I get no privileges just disrespect. I am the "ugly American")

More over, I do not see how us western foreigners are destroying the the Philippines? Could it be foreigners, like me, are destroying the nation financially? There is some validity to the assertion that we drive up prices to some degree. But usually there is one price for Filipinos and a higher price for foreigners. I took a small survey. I found the average foreigner spends P 67,000 each month. With roughly 1,000 foreigners in the area, that means the local economy gets a monthly boost of almost 67 million pesos and an annual boost of over 854 million pesos. This does not even consider all the orphanages and other charities we support.

To put that into perspective, in order for Silliman University to match that income it would have to charge each of it's 8,700 students tuition fees of 95 thousand pesos per semester (twice what a normal degree costs). That makes us fat old foreigners the LOCAL ( not counting OFW's ) major single source of income for this province. Maybe that is one reason why there are new buildings, homes and malls being built all over the province. Obviously foreigners are not financially destroying the country ; we are significantly supporting this beautiful nation and for this we and our families often get yelled at and disrespected. Is that the right thing to do? My Filipino friends, do foreigners really deserve to be attacked verbally, physically, socially and legally? Do we deserve to be beaten to death in your streets? How exactly are we destroying the Philippines.
