PAL reduces HK flights; Cebu Pacific slashes rates

PHILIPPINE Airlines has reduced its flight frequencies to and from Hong Kong, while budget carrier Cebu Pacific is slashing rates in the aftermath of the Aug. 23 hostage-taking in Manila in which eight Chinese tourists were killed.

"Due to the lean season and in response to lower traffic after the tragic Quirino Grandstand incident, PAL has reduced its frequencies to four times from five times daily, but only for the period of Sept. 2 to Nov. 24, 2010," spokeswoman Cielo Villaluna said.

"All affected passengers have been rebooked to the merged flights."

Villaluna said the airline will waive the penalties for the canceled Hong Kong, China and Philippine-issued tickets until Sept. 15.

The carrier has experienced 1,100 cancellations covering flights from Hong Kong and parts of China as of Aug. 27, four days after a dismissed policeman held a bus full of Hong Kong tourists hostage and then shot and killed eight of them before he himself was killed in a botched rescue attempt.

China and Hong Kong condemned the police's incompetence and asked Manila to explain. Hong Kong also canceled all package tours to the Philippines and told its nationals to avoid the country.

Tourism Secretary Alberto Lim said Monday Hong Kong's tourism industry could suffer bigger losses than the Philippines as a result of the fallout from the hostage-taking incident.

"Many Hong Kong tourists canceled their bookings due to the crisis and due to the travel advisory," Lim said.

"We understand that and there is not much we can do about it, but there are Filipinos who also put off their trips to Hong Kong because they feared a possible backlash."

More than 1,000 tour groups from Hong Kong and China had canceled their trips to the Philippines, resulting in a loss of $200,000, the China Daily said Monday quoting Tourism Undersecretary Simeon Marfori.

Meanwhile, budget carrier Cebu Pacific Air has cut its fares to Hong Kong and Macau to boost travel demand amid the increasing cancellations brought on by the Hong Kong government's travel advisory against the Philippines.

Cebu Pacific has come up with a seat sale to Hong Kong and Macau after reporting over 1,000 cancellations from these routes and other destinations in China as of last week. The seat sale is available starting today, Tuesday, for travel from Nov. 1 to Dec. 15, 2010.

Passengers could avail themselves of the P1,499-Go Lite seats from Manila or Clark to Hong Kong, and from Clark to Macau. P1,999-Go Lite seats were also available for the Cebu-Hong Kong and Manila-Macau flights, the airline said.

KLM/Air France: maatregelen tegen pedoseksuelen

KLM en Air France gaan er voor zorgen dat alleenreizende kinderen niet door onbekende volwassenen kunnen worden lastiggevallen. Hoe wel de luchtvaartmaatschappijen niet direct willen zeggen waarom ze de maatregel nemen, lijkt het tegen pedoseksuelen te zijn gericht.

Minderjarigen bij Air France mogen niet meer naast een volwassene zitten die ze niet kennen. Bij KLM, partner van Air France, mag dat nog wel, maar kinderen zullen tijdens de vlucht scherp in de gaten worden gehouden door het personeel.

Klachten
KLM wil overigens niets kwijt over de achterliggende reden voor de maatregel. Air France heeft aan correspondent Frank Renout van de Wereldomroep laten weten dat er klachten zijn geweest op vluchten naar de Verenigde Staten. Waar de klachten over gingen, is niet gezegd.

'Ouders zouden bij de maatschappij hebben geklaagd dat hun kind tijdens de vlucht naast een onbekende volwassene zat.' De Franse luchtvaartmaatschappij wil niet kwijt of er een kind ook echt is lastiggevallen.

De maatregel kan te maken hebben met de angst voor schadeclaims, zegt Renout. 'Vooral in de Verenigde Staten leeft een claimcultuur. Mensen stappen al snel naar de rechter voor een hoge schadevergoeding. En daar zitten de maatschappijen absoluut niet op te wachten.'

Veiligheid
De maatregel is genomen om het kind een veilige zitplaats te kunnen bieden, toch is niet iedereen er blij mee. Piloten van Air France hebben bijvoorbeeld moeite met de maatregel. Als in de cabine de luchtdruk wegvalt, moeten volwassenen eerst zelf een zuurstofmasker op zetten voordat ze hun kind helpen.

Dat wordt onmogelijk als er niemand naast een alleenreizende minderjarige mag zitten. 'En eenmaal met zo'n masker op kun je niet twee banken oversteken om zo'n kind te helpen', zegt Renout. 'Sommige piloten weigeren de maatregel dan ook uit te voeren. Uit oogpunt van veiligheid.'

PAL upgrades Iloilo service

Flag carrier Philippine Airlines has begun upgrading its services in Manila-Iloilo route with the use of the bigger Airbus A330-300 aircraft in one of its three daily flights.

The twin-aisle aircraft can seat up to 302 passengers, offering Iloilo-bound passengers in-flight comfort and amenities better than the A320 airplane used to offer, a company statement said on Tuesday.

The A330 can also carry up to 22 tons of cargo, enough to accommodate Iloilo's fresh produce and other freight regularly bound for Manila and other international destinations.

PAL on Tuesday conducted a commercial probing flight (PR 141) on the Iloilo route using the A330.

Air fares up as Asian travel rebounds from recession

SINGAPORE–Asia-Pacific airlines are raising ticket prices as travellers return in their droves after holding back on their travel plans last year because of the global recession.

A strong economic rebound, led by China, has resulted in carriers filling more seats during the summer holidays and demand should remain robust despite slower expansion in the second half of this year, industry analysts said.

Singapore Airlines (SIA) said it will raise fares on certain routes from October 1, while Korean Air bumped up ticket prices for international passengers by up to 10 percent in August, its second increase since June.

"Air fares are generally a function of market demand and supply and they are adjusted depending on market conditions," an SIA spokesman told AFP.

"Actual changes in fares also vary from route to route, and a range of fares is offered in different booking classes."

While the carrier did not give details of the increases, the local Straits Times newspaper said SIA raised fares by as much as $148 for an economy seat and $742 for a premium ticket.

More than one million travellers visited Singapore in July, crossing the seven-figure mark for the first time ever in a single month, thanks in part to the lure of two new casino resorts in the city-state.

Australian flag-carrier Qantas increased its international and domestic fares on July 28 by three percent.

"Pricing is reviewed continuously across all routes, taking into account demand and capacity, competitor activity and business performance," Qantas said in announcing the price hike.

Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific and its subsidiary Dragonair posted July passenger traffic figures that were 19.5 percent higher than in 2009 with the pair carrying 2.48 million passengers combined.

But a Cathay spokeswoman declined to comment on whether the carriers had jacked up prices.

"We won't comment on fares–they differ by market. But (the price) is based on supply and demand," she told AFP in Hong Kong.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) said in its latest report that it expected global passenger traffic to expand by 7.1 percent this year despite a projected easing of the economic rebound in the second half.

While average airline fares are rising, they are still below levels reached before the US-triggered global economic meltdown that struck in the third quarter of 2008, the global airline trade body said.

The global recession lasted well into 2009 and IATA estimates that the world's civil aviation industry lost $9.4 billion that year.

"Average one-way economy fares are 15 percent higher compared to the 2009 low, but still five percent below the early 2008 peaks," IATA spokesman Albert Tjoeng told AFP.

Premium airline fares are 10 percent above 2009 lows but still 20 percent below the pre-recession peaks, he added.

Regional airlines carried a record 17.2 million international passengers in July, up 20.4 percent from the same month last year, according to the latest data from the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (Aapa).

In the first seven months of the year, the carriers carried 15.6 percent more passengers over the same period last year, it said.

This reflected "growing consumer confidence across the Asia-Pacific region," said Aapa director-general Andrew Herdman.

"Commercial activity has also picked up strongly, leading to a rebound in premium passenger traffic on both regional and long-haul routes," he said in a recent press statement.

Iata chief Giovanni Bisignani has cautioned however that the airline industry's recovery will be affected by the forecast slowdown in global economic growth in the second half of 2010.

Aapa's Herdman said airlines were still cautious about expanding seat capacity and adding routes.

"Asian airlines are still focussed on careful management of capacity, tight cost controls and ongoing efforts to achieve further productivity improvements as the industry strives to restore profitability after two years of heavy losses," he said.

AMSTERDAM -  De KLM probeert Britse homo's aan zich te binden en te overtuigen van de homovriendelijkheid van de Nederlandse luchtvaartmaatschappij.

Met een online spel op www.theklmgaygetaway.co.uk probeert de KLM de Britse homoseksuele reizigers mee te nemen langs de homosteden in de wereld. "De homogemeenschap zit veel op internet en de meesten van hen reizen veel. De KLM is een optie voor hen, omdat we vanaf 15 vliegvelden in Groot-Brittannië via homostad Amsterdam naar de hele wereld vliegen", promoot KLM-marketingmanager Verane Brissaud op een Britse site.

Homo's en lesbiennes vormen een lucratieve doelgroep voor bepaalde luchtvaartmaatschappijen, omdat homoseksuele stellen vaak een dubbel inkomen hebben en geen kinderen, waardoor ze tijd en geld hebben om veel te reizen.

Het is normaal dat de KLM extra aandacht besteed aan bepaalde doelgroepen. Zo is er vaak ook extra aandacht voor zakenlui en golfers.

Beschonken piloot uit cockpit gevist
SCHIPHOL -  De politie heeft dinsdagmiddag op Schiphol een 52-jarige piloot uit de cockpit gehaald wegen dronkenschap. De Amerikaanse gezagvoerder uit Woodbury New Jersey stond op het punt om met een vol vliegtuig op te stijgen.

De politie had een anonieme tip gekregen over de man. Nadat bij de piloot een ademtest was afgenomen, bleek hij inderdaad te veel gedronken te hebben. Gedurende 10 uur voorafgaand aan een vlucht mag er door vliegtuigpersoneel geen alcohol worden genuttigd. In overleg met het Openbaar Ministerie heeft de man een boete gekregen van 700 euro, die de gezagvoerder direct heeft betaald.

Bonden dreigen met staking op Brussels Airport

Het gemeenschappelijk vakbondsfront heeft een stakingsaanzegging ingediend bij Brussels Airport. De eerste acties vinden mogelijk vanaf volgende week dinsdag plaats, melden verscheidene kranten.
Eén van de redenen waarom de vakbonden bij Brussels Airport een stakingsaanzegging indienden betreft het personeelstekort. "Er zijn tientallen werknemers tekort. Het probleem doet zich voor in alle diensten maar vooral in de operationele zoals de veiligheid, ontvangst, inspectie... Hierdoor loopt het aantal overuren op, worden verloven niet toegekend en moet men soms meer opeenvolgende prestaties leveren dan de arbeidswet toelaat", aldus vakbondsman Jan Francois (ACV-Transcom).

Daarnaast tillen de vakbonden ook zwaar aan het feit dat de directie wil raken aan het personeelsstatuut. "Bij de oprichting van BIAC in 1998 zijn 700 statutairen overgekomen van de Regie der Luchtwegen. Momenteel liggen voorstellen op tafel die een bedreiging vormen voor hun statutaire werkzekerheid", aldus François.

Een ander heikel punt betreft de houding van personen uit het middenkader naar het personeel toe. "Afspraken met de directie blijken soms niet op het terrein te worden uitgevoerd". Een ander aanslepend dossier is het reorganisatieplan van de security-dienst. "Wij laken hier het gebrek aan toekomstvisie. Meer algemeen zijn we niet te spreken over de besluiteloosheid. Al maanden liggen tientallen dossiers op tafel zonder dat ze afgerond geraken".

De vakbonden verwachten maandag een mail van de directie met een aantal voorstellen om de aangekaarte problemen aan te pakken. Dinsdag wordt hierover een hele dag onderhandeld. "Men moet niet vrezen dat wij direct gaan actie voeren. We waarschuwen de directie wel ervoor te zorgen dat er op het terrein geen spontane acties uitbreken, want dit hebben we niet in de hand", aldus François. (belga/sam/gb)
