Concerns remain over aviation safety in the Philippines12/18/2011 5:00:00 PM

Authorities in the Philippines have presented an aviation report to the EU, outlining improvements in the country's air safety record as it looks to strike itself from the EU blacklist. Concerns remain, however, over, aviation safety.

Representatives form both side met in Manila last week, where members of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) presented their case to European officials. There are still outstanding concerns, however, which must be addressed before the ban is lifted.

Viorel Isticioaia-Budura, Managing Director for Asia and Pacific of the European External Action Service (EEAS), told The Philippine Star; "The EU looks forward to the time when the ban can be lifted but the timing will depend on the corrective measures implemented by the Philippine government to address the deficiencies as reported by the EU Safety

After dancing flight attendants, Cebu Pacific offers improv comedy

abs-cbnNEWS.com 12/31/2011

MANILA, Philippines - Following the success of its dancing flight attendants gimmick last year, local airline Cebu Pacific is offering its passengers another way to keep its passengers entertained -- improv comedy.

In a video uploaded on YouTube on Friday, Manila-based Silly People's Improv Theater (SPIT) performed before passengers of Cebu Pacific's Zamboanga-Manila flight.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=UqcMhgmLnPk

A "three-headed oracle" called Madame Bienvenidos con Todo Jr. suddenly told fortunes during the flight, much to the delight of passengers and flight attendants.

"Limang numero ang kaya kong ibigay. Twenty-two, 51, 12, 1/2, .5," the three male performers spoke alternately when asked of a winning lotto combination.

"Magkakaroon ka ng syota kung magiging lalaki ka," they said when a passenger asked if he will have a girlfriend who is a flight attendant.

ABS-CBN's Gabe Mercado, who is the artistic director and founder of SPIT, served as host during the performance.

"Sila ang pinaka-accurate na manghuhula ng Pilipinas," he said, referring to the so-called three-headed oracle.

Improv comedy, a form of improvisational theater, uses audience suggestions to contribute to the content and direction of a performance. It does not involve any script or memorized dialogue.

Last year, Cebu Pacific's dancing flight attendants became a huge Internet sensation picked up by news organizations across the globe.

Carrying seat belts, life jackets and oxygen masks, young female flight attendants danced to Lady Gaga's "Just Dance" and Katy Perry's "California Gurls" while demonstrating safety procedures.

Hopelijk snijden ze zich niet in hun eigen vel ....want duurder worden betekent misschien ook minder aantrekkelijk voor de doorsnee reiziger die op de kleintjes let .....

NAIA tower radar data defective: source

abs-cbnNEWS.com Posted at 01/07/2012 1

MANILA, Philippines — A vital aviation equipment used by air traffic controllers at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) has malfunctioned, according to a report by airline sources.

The sources said that the airport's tower radar data display (TRDD) has been defective since December 26.

The TRDD is an equipment used by air traffic controllers to identify all aircraft that are within the 60 mile-radius of the aerodome surrounding NAIA.

The system is also vital in the technical description in monitoring and measuring the distance, speed and altitude of every aircraft passing through the airport.

It is also an important tool in guiding pilots as relayed by the air traffic controllers.

With this unit unserviceable, airlines should expect longer queues at the runway during takeoff and landing, which may cause additional expenses for their companies and inconvenience to domestic and international passengers

The defective TRDD also poses as a serious safety concern to the airline companies.

Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines Director General Ramon Gutierrez confirmed that they have notified airport personnel and pilots of the defect.

Gutierrez said that he was given assurance by air traffic service staff that there is no cause for alarm and that all pilots were reminded to temporarily practice visual and manual approach.

Guitierez added that the defective TRDD is now being addressed by his technical staff. He has also assured the public of their safety. -- Report from Raoul Esperas
