No terminal fee hike

Journalonline February 22, 2012

THERE will be no terminal fee increase.

Thus, Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) general manager ret. Gen. Jose Angel Honrado declared yesterday, as he vehemently denied reports stating  he will again increase the terminal fee of P550 to P750.

"Any increase in airport fees will be triggered only by specific needs or objectives and it will have to undergo the normal process of getting the board approval and public hearings," Honrado said in a statement sent to the media by Connie Bungag, head of the media affairs division.

Stressing there is no such need right now, Honrado said news that he will impose the increased fee now is ridiculous, especially since the said fee has just been reverted to its original rate of P550 beginning last February 1.

The old fee was restored as the five-year security development program for which the fees were raised to P750 ended last January 31.

The additional  P200 to the P550 terminal fee at the airport was imposed last February 1, 2007 to raise funds for the acquisition of state-of-the-art security equipment at the airport terminals and facilities.

Accordingly, the collection of the security development fee was approved by the MIAA Board for a term of five years and under the program, the said amount collected from the SDF would be allocated for the acquisition of new surveillance cameras and state-of-the-art x-ray machines for use at the country's premier airports.

To bolster his point, Honrado explained that as mandated in the MIAA Charter and as a requirement in government regulations, any increase in fees and charges must first be approved by the MIAA Board then undergo a public hearing which is a long and tedious task.

Meanwhile, travelers using the four airport terminals in Manila -- NAIA Terminals 1, 2, 3 and the Manila Domestic Airport -- can now enjoy free wireless-fidelity (WIFI) connectivity.

The free WIFI which Honrado and NAIA assistant general manager for emergency and security services Maj. Gen. Vicente Guerzon launched yesterday, will enable both departing and arriving passengers in all airport terminals including the domestic airport, to work online, check emails or travel itineraries, and surf the net while at the airport.

The free Internet system can accommodate 20,000 users at any given time and is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  It was installed in all passenger areas of the NAIA, including the departure lobby, check-in counters, boarding gates, passenger halls, immigration areas, baggage carrousel, customs area and the arrival lobby.

CebuPac to lease four Airbus units

Manila Standard Today, Febr 23. 2011

Cebu Pacific Air on Wednesday said it will lease four large Airbus aircraft from a US firm as part of a plan to mount long-haul flights to the United States, the Middle East, Australia and Europe.

Cebu Pacific, the budget airline controlled by the Gokongwei group, said it had signed operating lease agreements on four new Airbus A330-300 aircraft with CIT Aerospace, a unit of the CIT Group Inc.

The four Airbus A330-300 aircraft will be delivered from 2013 to 2014 and will be powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 772B engines, it said.

CIT Aerospace provides financing solutions to operators of commercial and business aircraft, manufacturers and suppliers in the aerospace and defense industries as well as financial institutions. CIT owns or finances a fleet of 300 commercial aircraft.

Cebu Pacific is bent to commence long-haul flights by the third quarter of 2013 and said earlier it was looking at flights to the US, the Middle East, Australia and Europe to tap demand from Filipinos living outside the country.

The move will allow the airline to serve new markets beyond the range of Cebu Pacific's current fleet of Airbus A320 aircraft.

"These Airbus A330-300 aircraft will allow us to offer our trademark low fares to an even wider market. With the introduction of wide-body aircraft into our fleet, we could offer non-stop services into Australia, India, the Middle East and parts of Europe and the US," said Alex Reyes, Cebu Pacific general manager for long-haul division.

The airline has flown over 60 million passengers since it was established in 1996. It also posted a good track record in stimulating short-haul travel of passengers around Asia, with a 14 percent systemwide passenger growth in 2011.

The airline currently offers 19 international destinations and 33 domestic destinations. It currently operates 10 Airbus A319, 20 Airbus A320 and 8 ATR-72 500 aircraft.

Its fleet of 38 aircraft, with an average age of 3.6 years, is one of the youngest aircraft fleets in Asia. Cebu Pacific said it would take delivery of 22 more Airbus A320 and 30 Airbus A321neo aircraft orders and two Airbus A320 aircraft on operating lease agreements between 2012 and 2021.

Philippine Airlines in sale talks with San Miguel

Philippine Airlines said Friday it was in talks to sell a stake in the loss-making flag carrier to local conglomerate San Miguel.
"Talks are definitely ongoing," airline spokeswoman Cielo Villaluna told AFP when asked to confirm media reports that negotiations were under way.
"As to the acquisition of shares and details of the negotiations, we are bound by non-disclosure until (the) fine print of the deal is reached."
One report said San Miguel planned to pay $500 million for a 49-percent stake in PAL and take management control, but Villaluna refused to discuss details.
A San Miguel spokeswoman did not immediately reply to an AFP request for comment.
PAL, majority owned by Philippine tycoon Lucio Tan, suffered a 1.45-billion-peso ($34 million) pre-tax loss in the three months to December 2011, its listed parent firm, PAL Holdings, reported on Tuesday.
PAL was forced to cancel many flights during that quarter amid industrial action as airline management outsourced 2,600 jobs in in-flight catering, airport services and call center reservations in an effort to cut costs.
The latest result put the airline 3.60 billion pesos in the red in the first nine months of its current fiscal year, according to the parent firm.
PAL had a near-monopoly on the domestic aviation market two decades ago but now ranks second in terms of number of flights behind local budget carrier Cebu Pacific.
San Miguel, one of the country's largest companies, has aggressively expanded its focus over the past few years from its core brewing operations into oil refining, electricity, toll roads, and construction.
