Dollar falls against euro on intervention rumors

NEW YORK — The dollar fell against the euro Wednesday on rumors of intervention by the European Central Bank as analysts speculated the Federal Reserve and the Bank of England may also be drawn to shore up the single European currency.

In its strongest rally against the greenback since the beginning of the year, the euro fetched $1.2408 in New York at 2100 GMT, from $1.2206 Tuesday, when the European unit slid to its lowest level since April 17, 2006.

The greenback also dropped against the Japanese currency, at 91.70 yen from 92.21 yen.

"There was no major eurozone economic data released today and so the move was largely credited to intervention," said Kathy Lien, director of currency research at Global Forex Trading.

"The reason why traders suspected the central bank of being in the market is because there were a few cases of sharp rallies" in the euro against the dollar, she said.

Lien said the ECB might "elicit the help of the Federal Reserve and Bank of England if they decide to intervene to maximize the impact."

The European Union has called for coordination against speculative trading, stoking negative market reaction rather than calming it.

Global stockmarkets slumped Wednesday as a surprise German strike against speculative trading backfired, panicking nervous investors instead of reassuring them the authorities were fully in control.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel called Wednesday for a radical overhaul of Europe's fiscal rules along German lines, warning of "incalculable consequences" for the European Union if the euro were to fail.

The markets remain concerned despite a near trillion-dollar package to prevent the troubles of debt-ridden Greece spreading to the rest of Europe.

In the United States, consumer prices fell for the first time in 13 months in April, the government said Wednesday, pointing to no quick hike in interest rates, which are currently at virtually zero percent.

The consumer price index, which tracks the average price of consumer goods and services purchased by households, declined 0.1 percent on the back of falling oil prices, the Labor Department said.

It was the first drop since March 2009 and came below the forecast of most analysts, who had expected a rise of 0.1 percent.

The April government price data "is a clear indication" that the Federal Reserve should continue to keep rates "exceptionally low for an extended period of time," said IHS Global Insight US economist Gregory Daco.

In late New York trading, the British pound rose to $1.4442 from $1.4335 a day earlier.

The dollar rose to 1.1508 Swiss francs from 1.1470 amid reports the Swiss central bank also intervened in the market.

De vreugede is helaas van korte duur Het â,¬ tje dondert verder naar omlaag en idem dito de Peso  . Hoelang nog? Sterkte aan diegenen die het met een klein inkomen moeten doen in dit land.

En desondanks blijft het gezien alle ophanden zijnde bezuinigingen in  , waarbij de meest kwetsbaren "gepakt" worden, toch aantrekkelijker om in alle vrijheid in de  te blijven.
Hier hoef je tenminste geen rekening te houden met de wisselingen van seizoenen in de zin van bijvoorbeeld de verwarming een paar graden lager te zetten en in een warmere trui in de kamer te moeten zitten.

Hier zit er nog een rek in door te voeren bezuinigingen terwijl je vaak in  al op de grens van het acceptabele zit.

Wat denkt men?
Als er enige stabiliteit is ontstaan dan komt er wel weer een ander feit naar voren om alles omlaag te drukken, nu noord korea weer, welke wellicht grote gevolgen kunnen hebben internationaal.

Voorlopig gaan de beurzen weer omlaag en ik kan nergens hoop uit putten dat de euro weer omhoog gaat.


Het gaat echt niet goed in de wereld.
